yourminis.com – exportable dashboard widgets

An interesting change in the widget space recently is the ability to 'export' widgets from the dashboard sites and drop into your blog. About a month ago the personalized dashboard service yourminis.com pushed out functionally for users to export their widgets (Flash based) and embed into their "online identities" including social site like myspace and Facebook, your blog or any other website.

To export a yourminis widget, mouse-over the widget and a "copy me" link should appear in the top-right corner.

For more widgets please visit www.yourminis.com

Yesterday we used a yourminis.com widget to display a Yahoo!pipes mashup called YouTunes.

    Geoffrey:

Exporting widgets is very cool. How about the opposite – importing widgets found in “the wild” onto yourminis, netvibes, pageflakes, et al.

For me, it’s much more important that I have a place to put my widgets other than my blog sidebar. Do you know which, if any, of the widget platforms allows folks to simply copy/paste their embed code into their account?

    Thanks, Tim

    Hi Timothy,

I’m sure this feature is coming. All of the widget homepages have been very closed systems, but I see that changing quickly. Both Netvibes and yourminis released new versions this week. New API’s are being released.

Because yourminis is 100% Flash (at the moment), they might have a tougher time providing this functionality than netvibes or pageflakes.

For the HTML/AJAX based sites like netvibes and pageflakes, being able to import a widget should be trivial. They should just be able to provide a simple ‘container’ widget which runs anything you put inside.

The first to offer this feature is going to get a nice adoption boost.

I’ll keep this thread updated with news as I hear it.
